About Shumska

A quiet practice in clay

Shumska is a small ceramic practice rooted in everyday use, nature, and the beauty of imperfect things. Each piece is made slowly, by hand, with attention to form, texture, and how it will live in someone’s home. The work is functional first — meant to be held, used, and returned to again and again.

About Zorana

I’m Zorana, the person behind Shumska. I began working with clay in 2024, though the need to make has always been present in my life. I live on a small farm, close to the forest, where the landscape, the seasons, and daily routines shape the way I see and work.

By day, I’m an English teacher. Outside of teaching, I spend my time with the land, caring for animals, and working with my hands. Clay became a natural extension of that rhythm — something slow, tactile, and grounding. It offered a way to bring together many parts of my life: attention, patience, and a love for natural materials.

The work

My pieces are influenced by organic forms and quiet surfaces. I’m drawn to softness, subtle variation, and marks that show the hand behind the object. Nothing is made to be perfectly uniform. Each piece carries small differences — a slight curve, a texture, a trace of the process.

Shumska ceramics are made for everyday rituals: for the table, for holding, for burning, for simple moments at home. They are not meant to be precious, but familiar — objects that become part of daily life.

Why clay

Clay arrived at the right time. It gave shape to something that had lived quietly inside me — an artist’s way of seeing, and a desire to create with care. Working with clay continues to teach me patience, presence, and acceptance of imperfection.
